A12 Highway Reopened After Extinction Rebellion Protest, Over 500 Arrests

The A12 highway near The Hague in the Netherlands was blocked for several hours on Saturday by climate activists from Extinction Rebellion (XR) protesting against the government’s handling of subsidies for fossil fuel producers.

The highway was cleared by police and reopened shortly after 5:30 P.M. on Saturday.

According to police, hundreds of people were arrested at the protest, but an exact number has not yet been announced.

However, XR claims that more than 500 activists were arrested.

The activists were taken away in buses and placed in gymnasiums, among other places.

A spokesperson for XR said that the protest was a success and showed the level of support for their demand to stop subsidies for the fossil fuel industry.

They also reported that around 1,000 activists were present on the A12 and another 2,000 supporters along the road.

On Twitter, XR claimed that “excessive force” was allegedly used by police during some arrests.

For example, one video shows a police officer trying to turn off a protester’s bodycam.

XR said they would review the footage with their legal team and decide whether to file a lawsuit.
