Gambling Companies in the Netherlands Break Promise to Reduce Ads Despite Proposed Ban

Casinos in the Netherlands have spent much more on gambling ads, despite promising to reduce their “untargeted” advertisements and not show gambling ads on television before 10:00 P.M. This news comes from a report by NOS.

Last year, gambling companies in the Netherlands promised to reduce their “untargeted” advertisements, including those on bus shelters and TV, in response to a proposed ban by Minister Franc Weerwind of Legal Protection.

However, the ban is not due to take effect until July, and gambling companies have continued to spend millions on advertising, including these types of ads.

Belgium has approved a similar ban, and the Netherlands’ gambling industry associations have said that their members adhere to the agreements.

However, NOS reports that some companies still need to follow their example.

The Netherlands is a lucrative market for gambling companies, with residents spending almost half a billion euros online on gambling in the first half of 2022.

This is reflected in the amounts gambling companies spend on advertising in the country.

According to NOS figures, the top 10 advertisers in the Netherlands are Betcity, Kansino, Toto Online, FairPlay Casino, Holland Casino, Unibet, Tombola, Bet365, One Casino, and 711, with spending ranging from 7 million to 36 million euros.
